I have run across this one seveal times. Even though Premiere will not open
or import the file programs like Nero will utilize them to create other
video files. The only drawback is the other programs don't allow editing of
the files as far as I can tell. But, you can use them to create a DVD for
viewing.
Another way to gain editing access is to use the cable supplied with the
camera for TV playback. Hook that cable to any analog to DV pass-through
enabled digital camcorder or other such device, and capture it in realtime
to the hard drive. Edit the video and your on your way.
Though I do not know this to be fact, there may be a way to gain access to
the file using the cable and software which allows access to your pictures
on the chip. Normally I just hook the camera to the computer and access the
pictures off the camrea in My Computer, but there may be a way to bring in
the video using the supplied software and USB cable.
The DVD camcorder have a similar peculiarity where the video is accessed
through a supplied software over the USB cable. First you are shown
thumbnails of the clips on the disc and then when that is selected a copy is
made to the hard drive in a usable file format. In the case of the DVD
camcorder from Sony this is an MPG file 352x480, even though the video on
the disc is MPEG-2 VOB 720x480.
On the outset this problem of gaining access to the video on those discs
puzzled me when I tried all the normal options available through my previous
NLE experience. Then like I always tell everyone else I had to break down
and read the manual, which is where I made the amazing discovery of how it
actually was done successfully.
I hate to admit it but, the answer was right there in front of me all the
time. RTFM!!!!
Post by Paul TurnerPremiere says "Unsupported file type". What codec's do I need to
install? and where?
I'm a bit of a newbie with all this so please forgive me, although I
would have thought that I already had the appropriate codec, because I
can play these AVI files in Media Player etc.
Any help would be great, as I'm going to Africa in a few weeks to
produce some short films in tiny communities in Malawi!
Thanks,
Paul
