audio distortion and/or clipping when adding video to Premiere Pro 1.5

I use premiere pro 1.5 on a Pentium4 3.2GHz computer with MS Windows
XP Pro (SP2) 1 GB ram.

I have had a problem capturing video with PPro. It says the capture
device is online, but won't access it. Says to reset the camera. My
cam is Sony TRV38 DV. PPro site says this camera is fully compatible
although it does not appear in the PPro set up.

Not sure why it is doing this, but may be because of what I tell you
in the next step.

I have Roxio Easy Media Creator 8.0 suite installed because I like
using it's drag to disc features. I need to keep it on the computer.
Roxio also has a capture program (media import) which works fine.

Ques 1. Is it possible this Roxio pgm is interefering with my ability
to capture with PP1.5 ?

Problem number 2: I can capture DV video with Roxio's media import
program as I said above. This file saves to an .avi file which sounds
perfect when played back on the computer. The problem is when I put
this avi file in premiere pro 1.5, the audio becomes clipped.
ie....the loudest passages have noise and distortion in them. The
lower audio passages are OK.

If I try to lower the volume in ppro, it will lower, but the
distortion is still there. It appears to get there when the file is
added to the project.

Ques 2. What could be causing this? Is it possible it has something
to do with the transposing process? If so how do i fix it?

Need help, anyone.

Thanks

A follow up to my own question. When I said transposing process, I
think I meant to say auido conforming process. I corrected in the Ques
2 paragraph below.
