I am using a personally built computer that uses Windows XP, the system more than meets the requirements for using Premiere Pro.

I am trying to edit the content of a DVD using the standard Premiere Pro. I started by copying the .VOB files from the DVD to the desktop, I found out that Premiere Pro doesnt support them so I checked the Premiere Pro Help and it said to change the .VOB to .MPG which I did. I can import the files now with out a problem and they play in the source monitor just fine. When I add a file to the Timeline the audio becomes out of Sync. I checked the properties for my project and they match the files (29.97 fps and 4800khz), but I still have the sync problem. I read many of the topics on the forums and it seemed like all of the audio sync problems came from files captured, mine come from a DVD.

Your searches of forum replies should have found many, many references to problems with MPG/VOB files on the timeline. PPro is not an MPEG editor, it is a DV-AVI editor.

The files should be converted externally to Type 2 DV-AVI (not Divx, not Quicktime, not Sorenson, not etc.......), then imported. You won't have sync problems with that.

Now, my personal best experience has been to put the DVD disc into my DVR player. It has a Firewire port on the front and will output the DVD in DV AVI format. Or, you can take the S-Video output and audio output and route them through a DV-camcorder and let it do a conversion to DV AVI.

But - and I repeat this because it comes up so often - PPro (version 1.5 and 1.5.1) doesn't work with MPEG files well. It was never designed for it. Main Concept sells a plug-in that claims to make MPEG work as well as DV, but I am unconvinced.

If you want to edit MPEG2/VOB files Premiere Elements 2 is a better bet. The new version 2 has built in MPEG2/VOB support along with other popular formats.

Is DV AVI just another name for AVI or is it a different type of AVI

Joe, DV is a codec. AVI is a file format. AVI files can use one codec for video and one codec for audio. Please see "Codecs" in the "Software" section of the PPro Wiki.Cheers
