Pentium D or Pentium 4 or AMD

I have searched this site but I am still confused as to the optimal processor for APP. I am about to invest in a new PC which will be dedicated to APP. Is a dual core Pentium (820) going to be better than a single core (say 640) or would I be better with something in the AMD range? I am confused as to how a dual core improves performance when you are running a single program - will APP utilise the dual core when running alone or would I be better with a faster single core? (I will have 2Gb DDR2 memory and SATA II disc drives)Any help to decide would be appreciated....

The dual-core solution is SOOO MUCH BETTER than the single core products. You'll see it most in rendering. Since I bought my Dual-core system my two athlon systems have been relegated to graphics and printing.
