Audio playback was working (clips in timeline and project window preview were fine). Then I tried to record a voiceover to the timeline, with a mic I bought, and was unsuccessful in that the file created would not playback anything. Now none of the audio files that previously worked will playback or preview or work in any way except a visual indication in the audio meters. I have tried playing the same files directly on Windows Media Player, and they work there. I have tried the wing menu on the Monitor window for playback settings, and used every combination of choices. No change. Must be a setting somewhere that I don't know about or did my attempt to voiceover record with a mic damage something?

I'll answer my own question. In Edit/Preferences/Audio Hardware, in the audio device setting, I was using the Windows default setting, rather than the ASIO setting. That choice happened when I tried to match the audio device setting to my new mic, which did not have an ASIO driver. Returning to ASIO got the playback working again, although I still can't get my mic to create a usable audio file. But I'll return that mic device to CompUSA and try something else.
