Lacie D2 disconnecting while editing or conforming large files (2 hour video clip)

I captured a 2 hour video clip and began editing. In the middle of viewing footage, the video output through my firewire SonyDVCam began to flash and then PPro locked up. My Lacie BigDisk D2 500gb drive now connects and disconnects from my system, seeminly at random.

I'm using an eMachine, 1.5gb ram, AMD64 3200+, Win XP sp2.

Now when trying to conform imported audio, PPro locks up.

Any thoughts?

in my experience the lacie drives are a major problem, at least the
500gb ones are. i've had lots of problems with them. the web is full
of reports about them. a friend has a huge sound library stored on
them and his failure rate has been 75%.

those drives are really two drives inside an inadequately vented
case and tied together with a raid card. the raid card seems to
usually be the source of the problem. avoid overheating at all
costs. also, daisy chaining things on the firewire bus can be a
problem. better to put things on separate busses if possible. even
better, get rid of the 500gb and use two 250's, whatever you can
do to get away from that proprietary raid card.
