Discussion:
media encoder quicktime exports

Hi,
Have searched through most of the existing threads but can't find this problem:
Using the sorenson 3 encoder I can't get the end file size to decrease. I can have the "set bitrate" on and move the slider to either end, save as a preset and the resulting file size is exactly the same. As I am sending largish (450mb) animation files to clients via FTP I would really like to be able to compress check copies prior to sending a final cut. The clients use Macs and insist on Quicktime movies (don't ask)

Thanks

The QT encoding engine in Premiere v6.5 ignores the bit rate setting (or at least is not rigorous in following it) and instead uses the 'quality' option as the bit rate guide. This may be the case for PPro as well.

Hi GB, Thanks for replying, unfortunately the other adjustable setting: spatial quality, doesn't have any effect on final size; quality or anything else I can see. Do you know if any other Codecs work for compressing a QT movie? I can't just reduce the size as the images are being reviewed for FX and the like.

Cheers,

Morgan

Not sure what you mean by 'spatial quality' but in v6.5 I export to Sorensen frequently, reducing the clips to 200KB/s from the DV source 3500KB/s with the 'quality' slider set to below 50% -- the 'limit data rate' box on the same dialogue page does NOT work as expected, but the quality slider does.

Your mention of codecs confuses me -- what codec are you using now? Some codecs can not be compressed, and the once labelled 'animation' has a fixed (large) data rate if I'm not mistaken ... try Sorensen.

Not sure what they mean by "Spatial Quality" either, it's just what they call the first slider in the sorenson 3 codec, the other being "bitrate" neither have any effect on anything! So... I've tried sorenson 3, sorenson, apple animation & a number of others but can't reduce file size without reducing picture size, the QT presets i.e, "512k streaming pal" etc all refer to using sorenson 3 codec but also all reduce the image size to 160 x 120 and such like.

Under WM9 the edit will come out at 14mb for 2 minutes @ 720x576
Under QT exactly the same stuff is 436mb over 30 times the size!

The slider I'm describing is not part of the Sorensen codec dialogue, it is part of the v6.5 Premiere export dialogue. If the options are the same in PPro, don't use the Sorensen dialogue but instead the Premiere one.

I'm having the same issue and it is very annoying because however much I like the Windows Media platform, I like to at least offer QuickTime downloads. If anyone has a solution please let us know. Only thing I have come up with is using a seperate video encoding software that will export QuickTime.

Cheers GB I found where you mean now, it requires not exporting via the media encoder. The slider you refer to is only available from export/movie.
(Hopefully this will sort Not Jason as well)
