EDL Export not working correctly...

OK- Basically we are trying to export EDLs created in Premiere Pro 1.5 so that we can import them into Final Cut Pro. The problem is that when I import them into FCP, the clips show up correctly in the timeline however the in and out points I selected are ignored and all of the clips in the timeline start playing from the beginning of the media instead of playing from the in point that I selected for that piece of media. I thought it was a FCP problem, but when I import the EDL back into Premiere it does the same thing.

Does anyone have any advice for getting EDLs to import into FCP correctly?

you'll be lucky if you're able to get it to work at all.
I had to give up after much troubleshooting. one thing
to watch is timecode consistency on the original tapes.
edl export from ppro will not work if some tapes are df
and others ndf. this is something i'm hoping to see fixed
in the next release but i'm not holding my breath. with
most 'prosumer' level apps like ppro and fcp the best way
to exchange projects is to make sure everyone is on the
same platform.

in this case it sounds as though there could be other
issues as well. check to see that your xfer deck (or
camera) supports the use of actual timecode. apparently
some do not. rgbaker will have more on issues like this.
hopefully he's listening. ;)

another option to look into is aaf, although, many have
reported problems with that as well.

good luck,

AAFs aren't going to allow full recovery of a project either. Video effects and audio effects/transitions will be ignored as well as the PPro titles in most cases, but the basic video transitions and cuts for video and audio should translate. I know with version 7.0, Adobe provides a word document labeled "Premiere AFF plug-in" in the PPro program files folder. This document will give you details about the limitations with AAFs.

Yeah, I tried exporting AAF as well, but Final Cut does not have built in AAF import capabilities. Automatic Duck did provide a free AAF import plugin for FCP, and it kinda works but there is a glitch where the right audio track is duplicated in the FCP timeline to both A1 and A2 in FCP and I've completely lost my left channel. This is a huge deal breaker for us as we shoot discreet audio on separate tracks for different mics. Automatic Duck is working on a new product for FCP that will include a different version of AAF import, but it's still not working correctly. Sigh....

I have similar problems, and hopefully someone has the answer:

I import an EDL file (CMX3600 format) into AP Pro 1.5, which contains 1 clip (say, from 00:02:03:20 to 00:03:03:20 w.r.t the original video "AVideo.mpg"). Now, when the EDL is imported and showed up as a bin (which contains "Sequence 01" and "AVideo.mpg"), the "AVideo.mpg" is at offline state. So I link it to the "AVideo.mpg" on the disk using "Link Media" function. This works well, however, when I play out the "Sequence 01", it starts from the very beginning of the "AVideo" instead of from the desired location (00:02:03:20).

Does anyone know how can the time information (media starts/ends/duration, video in/out points, etc.) be preserved when the "link media" function is called? How can I automatically get the edited video sequence by importing an EDL file?

Thanks a lot,

Ying

the issue of import/export between some form of universal format
like aaf or edl is and has been the biggest shortfall in ppro
(imho). with all the speculation on when 2.0 will be out and
what it will contain, this remains the main thing lacking. it
is what makes an app 'pro' or not. the issues described are
known and have been repeatedly commented upon. while i believe
it's possible there may be a solution to your problem, i'm
doubtful at this time and with ppro in its current state. the
first place i'd look, however, is in your source media. it
appears you are working with mpg files rather than dv-avi. i'd
recommend a test converting your source mpg's to dv-avi and
exporting using dv-avi's.
